Century 21 Owner suggests Waste dump survey flawed, irresponsible
I believe the broad publication of the poorly designed survey was irresponsible.

  1. Dr. Gray, Normally I do not respond to other peoples attack dogs; however, you were so utterly arrogant and mean spirited in your pummeling of my sweet little survey that I can’t resist. Your “professional opinion?” Dude, you sell real estate. As far as I can tell you’re a failed psychologist. Since you have a doctoral emphasis on statistical analysis, crunch these numbers; you arrived here 17+ years ago at the age of 27 or 28 and have worked in real estate ever since. Assuming that you were a diligent student and stayed on task you graduated High School at age 18 and college at age 22. It probably took two more years to get your MS and at least two for your doctorate. That makes you at least 26 when you finished your formal education. Unless you consider yourself to have been a professional student when, exactly, did you ever practice the profession of industrial/organizational psychology?

  2. Dr.Gray sounds like a very educated man without
street smarts. Let me be of help. There is an old saying”Don’t ca ca where you eat”
Interpretation………. Don’t sell real estate near a dump!

  3. NOVEMBER 28, 2009
    HELLO PAT,
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND INTEREST SHOWN AT OUR TUESDAY AFTERNOON MEETING.

AFTER THE MEETING I HAD A HARD TIME DECIDING HOW TO INTERPRET YOUR COMMENTS, AND EVEN MORE DIFFICULT WERE YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE JUNGO LANDFILL.

    •WHO DIDN’T DO THEIR HOMEWORK?
•WHO IN THE STATE IS RESPONSIBLE?
•HAS THE STATE O.K.’d THIS LOCATION?
    •AND WHY CONSPIRACY?

SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ THE HUMBOLDT SUN GUEST COMMENTARY OF NOVEMBER 27th.

MY CONCLUSIONS ARE THAT TIME SPENT WRITING ABOUT A FLAWED SURVEY COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER SPENT TRYING TO SEEK ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS LISTED ABOVE.

THE APPARENT LACK OF KNOWLEDGE YOU PROFESS IS EXTREMELY DISTURBING. CONSIDERING THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF A SURVEY CONDUCTED IN A FEW DAYS BY VOLUNTEERS USING THEIR OWN MONEY TO A LANDFILL POTENTIALLY COVERING 4 SQUARE MILES AND BECOMING A PERMANENT MONUMENT ON THE NORTHERN NEVADA LANDSCAPE, THE SUPPOSED DAMAGE DONE BY AN ADMITTEDLY UNSCIENTIFIC SURVEY IS TOTALLY INCONSEQUENTIAL COMPARED TO THE LACK OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WE ALL NEED TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CORRECT THE PURPORTED DAMAGE BY CONDUCTING A COSTLY, PROFESSIONAL, INDEPENDENT POLL. ALSO PLEASE DO THE SCIENTIFIC AND POLITICAL RESEARCH WHICH IS NEEDED TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ABOVE AND THE MANY OTHER ANSWERS REQUIRED CLEAR UP THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROJECT.

ATTACHED ARE TWO LETTERS REGARDING THE GUEST COMMENTARY MENTIONED ABOVE; THEY WERE POSTED ON THE NEVADANS AGAINST GARBAGE WEB SITE http://www.nevadansagainstgarbage.com

    I’M DEEPLY CONCERNED,

    TOM BRISSENDEN

  4. Well Mr. Gray, at least NAG and Mr. Cook did something, and that is much more than I can say about the city or county. All they have tried to do is push this dump through the back door. If you are so hot on “scientific” surveys, I suggest you push our so called “leaders” to have one done. On a project of this size that will affect everyone in the community for generations, this should have been a well publicized event and the “facts” you speak so highly of should have been known two or more years ago. The city and county have deep enough pockets. If they truly are interested in what the residents of Humboldt County want, let them hire an independent firm and conduct their own survey. That should have been done two or more years ago as well.

As far as the Mayor and her word games are concerned, I’m still shaking my head in disbelief! If you don’t like the sound of something, just change the words and everything will be hunky-dory. UNBELIEVABLE! Let’s don’t call it garbage, let’s call it a dollar bill factory. Garbage is garbage…..get used to it. You’ve heard the saying, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.

I think you are right about one thing Mr. Gray. The people of Humboldt County do deserve better. Better local and state government representation. Representation that finds out the facts, presents the facts to the people, does the surveys, and reflects the wishes of the voters. Not government with lax environmental standards, blinded by a handful of dollars and willing to sell our quality of life and our welfare to the highest bidder, regardless of the long term consequences.

So stop complaining and criticizing Mr. Gray. Start lobbying for your “scientific” survey. Find out those facts you talk about. They are out there and not hard to find. Start being part of the solution, not the problem.

  5. One should only hope that Dr. Gray had a Ph.D. in Geological Science or another Eco friendly area of study. In that way he might be more appreciative of how fragile and vulnerable the proposed Jungo Road Landfill site is. He starts his commentary with a charge of irresponsibility on the part of the Nevadans Against Garbage (NAG) and goes on to make some assumptions about the financing of the survey and its flaws.
I would have thought that any graduate of Cullman High School, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (BS), Auburn University (MS, Ph.D.) and the owner of Century 21 Winnemucca, would have gotten his facts straight. He didn’t.
He, as did Mayor Di An Putnam, felt the wording of the survey may have played a role in how people responded. If he believes that to be the case, I challenge him, the city or the county, to provide another survey using his expertise, to determine the true desires of the community about this issue.
I’m sure the citizens of Humboldt County would be interested in the outcome of such a survey. I for one would love to be there for the public opening of the survey responses.
Finally Patrick states that “I for one am looking for accurate, unbiased information regarding the pros and cons of the waste dump to develop an informed position. My personal, non-scientific survey suggests there are many more like me.”
    Repliers note:
The information is out there – the original documents are out there – my personal, non-scientific survey suggests the city and county officials are being blinded by the promise of up to million dollars a year for 95 years. I further believe that the same legacies of clean air, water and land that we inherited should be passed on to future generations. I also suggest that there are many more like me.
